Somewhere sensible

When a swap is agreed, Zwaptz suggests a few kinds of place to meet and writes the sentence for you, so arranging it does not become its own negotiation.

The suggestions are types of place, never addresses. Zwaptz does not know either of you well enough to name a street, and a confident wrong suggestion is worse than a general right one.

What works today

Four kinds of place — a police station’s marked exchange bay, a station concourse, a café, a supermarket entrance — each with a sentence already written that you can edit before you send it. That is built and running.

What the suggestion would be built from

Open now: A place that shuts at four is no use for a six o'clock handover, and finding that out on arrival is how a meeting moves somewhere worse.
Staffed: Somebody whose job is to be there. Not a promise about anything, but a different situation from an empty car park.
Busy at this hour: A station concourse at half past five and the same concourse at eleven at night are not the same place.
Near transit: Both of you can get there and away without a car, which matters more than it sounds when one of you is carrying a guitar.
Room for the item: A café table is fine for a camera and useless for a rowing machine. The suggestion would account for what you are actually handing over.

We never say safe

We never call a place safe.

Zwaptz has not been to any of these places. It does not know who is standing in one this evening, whether the lights work, or what the road outside is like after dark.

So it tells you what is true — that this one is open, that one is staffed, that one has a rack outside — and stops there. You know your own town, and you are a far better judge of it than a suggestion is.

A product that told you a place was safe would be making a promise on somebody else’s behalf.

Why the arrangement stays here

Working out where to meet is the job a chat box does worst, and it is the exact point at which two people give up and move to another app to sort it out.

Once that happens, the swap goes ahead somewhere else, nobody confirms a handover, and there is nothing for an administrator to read if it goes wrong. A suggestion that writes the sentence keeps the arrangement where the record is.

What to do when you get there — checking the item, telling somebody where you have gone, and leaving if it feels wrong — is on meeting safely.

Nobody at Zwaptz vets anybody, and no appraisal is an inspection — no one has seen either item. That is worth knowing before you agree a place rather than after.
